A bill that would allow New York hunters to use rifles instead of shotguns
to hunt deer and bear in Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties has been approved
by the state legislature. The bill was passed in June but has not been sent
to Governor George Pataki for his approval. The bill would allow hunters in
parts of Western New York and the Southern and Central tiers to use rifles.
It is currently legal to use rifles in six of the nine regions of the state.
