A lobbyist for Hershey's says taxing candy in Pennsylvania would be like
taxing cheese in Wisconsin.
A property tax reduction plan that cleared the state House last month would
add sales tax to candy, advertising and amusement tickets, among other items
that aren't taxed now.
Besides Hershey's, Pennsylvania is home to M&M Mars and produces more candy
than any state besides Illinois.
Many state senators are on Hersheys' side and, instead of taxing items that
aren't currently taxed, want to raise the sales tax to 6 point 5 percent.
The half point increase would raise about 650 million a year.
