I found these trilium flowers growing in the woods in McKean County near Smethport.
Trilium are a favored snack for deer, and until recently, have been considered quite rare.
In 1995, a game commissioner told me that seeing a trilium in bloom was extremely rare, because deer typically gobble up the plants before the petals appear.
This patch of them, with several in bloom, and several about to bloom could be considered an argument for limiting the deer population.
Many locals have begged the game commission to limit doe licences for a few years to allow the population to catch back up. Game commission executives are considering bag limits.
