A Warren woman who set a fire that killed her daughters has been sentenced
to life in prison without parole.
29-year-old Amy Nicole Niver pleaded guilty on Monday to two counts of
second-degree murder and one count of arson. Had she gone to trial and been
convicted of first-degree murder, she could have faced the death penalty.
The May 22nd fire killed 8-year-old Hannah Niver and 2-year-old Emma
Wightman. According to court records, Niver told a firefighter she started
the fire because she didn't want the father of her youngest daughter to take
the girls from her.
Niver's attorney says her doctor believes she has a long-term mental illness
but that wasn't enough to support an insanity defense.
