Kevin Ernst, lab/line attendant at the Saint-Gobain Containers plant here,
has been selected as one of five employees from throughout the United States
and Canada to win the Saint-Gobain Corporation "Volunteer Recognition
Award." The award was presented to Ernst at a special ceremony held
recently.
The award recognizes employees and retirees of Saint-Gobain Corporation (of
which Saint-Gobain Containers is a part) whose volunteer efforts are clearly
extraordinary and encourages employees and retirees to help improve their
communities through volunteerism. While extending recognition to employees,
the award also includes a $1,000 contribution to each of the organizations
the employees and retirees serve.
"This award recognizes not only our employees' and retirees' commitment to
volunteerism, but also their enthusiasm and concern," says Jean-François
Phelizon, president and chief executive officer of Saint-Gobain Corporation.
"Their contributions demonstrate outstanding public service and serve as a
role model for other employees and retirees."
Ernst won the award for his 19-year involvement with the Port Allegany Fire
Department; he is currently department chief.
One of Ernst's activities is the department's fire prevention program, which
annually educates between 500 and 600 people. "It's extremely rewarding at
the end of the day to realize how much I've taught someone, and to know that
their knowledge could potentially save their lives," says Ernst.
Adds Fred Kinney, Ernst's supervisor at Saint-Gobain Containers, "I have
known Kevin for the 24 years he has worked at the plant. He is dedicated in
the workplace as well as in the community. He does an outstanding job in
everything he is involved in."
A resident of Port Allegany, Ernst joined Saint-Gobain Containers in 1981.
Saint-Gobain Corporation's Volunteer Recognition Award is open to all U.S.
and Canadian employees and retirees of the company. In all, there were five
employee winners and one retiree winner of this year's award, selected from
more than 80 nominations.
The selection committee was comprised of representatives from various
Saint-Gobain businesses throughout the United States and Canada. The judges
made their selection based on each volunteer's overall contributions to his
or her community, leadership abilities, and the number of hours and number
of years volunteered to a single organization.
Saint-Gobain Corporation, based in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, is the
holding company for the U.S.- and Canadian-based businesses of Compagnie de
Saint-Gobain, one of the top 100 industrial companies in the world with more
than 180,000 employees in 49 countries. Saint-Gobain Corporation employs
approximately 25,000 people and operates about 170 plants throughout the
United States and Canada.
The Saint-Gobain Containers plant in Port Allegany employs approximately 350
people in the manufacture of glass containers for food, wine and beverage
customers throughout the United States.
Editor's Note:
While Kevin certainly is a great guy, in my opinion, it's his wife, Marcia, that deserves all the credit ;)
